Things from Belgium
17 December & 3 to 12 September 2014

Four hundred and fifty years after his death on the Greek Island of Zakynthos, Andreas Vesalius still scores high on the lists of the greatest of this world. This is not only so in Belgium where he was born in Brussels half a millennium ago. In a recent project establishing a universal pantheon his influence beats many.

The medical standards he set as an anatomist and a visionary physician are not the only explanation. His Magnum Opus, the Fabrica, a monument of scientific, didactic and artistic achievement, has added largely to make him survive the renaissance. Even some mysteries in his life, specifically in the last months and moments of his short life, boost the everlasting appeal.

The Embassy of Belgium in Athens and the Municipality of Zakynthos are honored to host a commemoration that confirms and even broadens his inspiration, beyond borders and time. A new monument, a contemporary exhibition, music concerts and new research presented at the international Vesalius Continuum conference will mark this quincentenary of Vesalius as a beacon for Arts & Sciences.
