2nd International Music Festival at the Montofoli Estate
A total of fifteen musicians will take the stage in the courtyard of St. Mark's church, accompanied by the scents of vines and citrus, to interpret works of great composers including: Corelli, Bach, Boccherini, Mozart, Fauré, Ysaÿe and Kovács. Following on from last year, the program will begin with a performance by students of the local Conservatory, whilst each evening will be rounded off with jazz.
The public's response to the festival's debut last year was beyond expectation, and even provided the impetus for the creation of a quartet bearing the name of the festival: the Montofoli String Quartet. The quartet is composed of top musicians from the Greek State Orchestras and will be the main musical host during the two-day program.
This year's festival will present the internationally acclaimed young Spanish clarinettist, Jose Franch-Ballester. Based in Philadelphia in the USA but originally from Valencia, Franch-Ballester has already appeared in many of the world's foremost concert halls and has recorded for the BBC and Deutsche Grammophon. Making their Greek debut are the Eburon brass quintet from Belgium — recent recipientsof the 1er Prix and "Coup de cœur Bayer" at the 8th International Chamber Music Competition in Lyon— whilst returning for the second consecutive year at the festival is acclaimed French saxophonist Sylvain Rifflet: performer, improviser, composer, and winner of the award for best original film score at the International Film Festival in Dubai.
Finally, we are delighted to welcome the Greek-Brazilian vocalist, songwriter, guitarist, and pianist, Katerina Polemi. During her amazing career she has extensively toured Europe, South America and the United States, appeared at Carnegie Hall and composed music for both the theatre and the cinema.
A few words on the Montofoli Estate located at the Ancient Town of Karystos, in South Evia: this is where, among other sites, is the Byzantine Temple of Saint Marcus. In its atrium courtyard, the concerts of Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 of June 2013 will be held.
Since 1987, the Estate also functions as a vineyard, ensconced in the Aegean tradition. Four indigenous grape varieties were planted; varieties that are renowned for the exceptional dessert wine they yield. The "Montofoli Estate" is the only dessert wine produced exclusively from grapes cultivated in the estate.
The Montofoli Estate is open to the public from the 1st of June to the end of September for guided tours and wine tasting, every Saturday at 7pm as well as on other days upon request.
