Mykonos Antanaclasis Festival
July - October 2011

From July to October, four luminous concerts with a vibrant programme, world-class soloists from the classical world bring masterworks of the classical and modern repertoire, jazz stars, as well as highlights of the Greek musical world...

The Festival aims at offering a unique opportunity to Greek artists to perform alongside with internationally acclaimed soloists and ensembles. Moreover, the participation of young musicians is a central aim of Antanaclasis Festival, with special concerts and masterclasses for young audiences.

This first edition of the festival includes

July, 7   at 21:30 – Lakka Open Theatre

"Delicious Chemistry Across The Universe" / Dimitri Vassilakis Quartet featuring Juliet Kelly

Dimitri Vassilakis, a saxophonist, singer and composer, has been described by the BBC Music Magazine as "The Greek God of Jazz". Vassilakis will present his latest album with adaptations of songs that have defined the past and branded generations, such as Nat King Cole's "Nature Boy", The Beatle's "Across The Universe", Door's "Light My Fire", Nina Simone's "Four Women", and so many others. He will also perform a selection of his prized compositions, as well as orchestrations which have been recorded in New York by a top-ranking Jazz colossus.

Our special guest, the soulful voice of distinctive British singer and songwriter Jazz diva Juliet Kelly, hailed by critics as one of the UK's finest jazz stars. She has worked with exceptional musicians including award-winners Seb Rochford, Courtney Pine and Tony Kofi and performed with Courtney Pine at the Barbican for the Jazz Britannia concert broadcast on BBC2 television.

Several tours have taken Juliet and her Glam Jazz style to venues around the UK and she has also performed further afield with sell-out shows in Germany, Italy, Greece, Russia and America.

Juliet will perform beloved favorites, as well as songs from her personal LPs "Aphrodite's Child" and "Delicious chemistry".

August, 18   at 21:00 – Grypario Cultural Centre

"Una noche de fantasia" / Jose Franch-Ballester, clarinet & Vanessa Benelli Mosell, piano

Jose Franch-Ballester, a rising young star of the clarinet world, native of Moncofa (Valencia, Spain) received a coveted Avery Fisher Career Grant and won the 2010 internationally renowned award "MIDEM Classique Outstanding Young Artists 2010". In 2007 he was one of a handful of participants selected for a Carnegie Hall Professional Training Workshop with Emmanuel Ax and Richard Stoltzman. He has already launched a phenomenal career for his age, that includes top performances with prestigious orchestras and soloists, recordings for the BBC and Deutsche Grammophon, and numerous concerts around the world.

Jose performs with the Italian Young Steinway Artist, Vanessa Benelli Mosell, who is internationally recognized as one of the great virtuoso young pianists, and has performed with such prestigious conductors and orchestras as Yuri Bashmet, Moscow Soloists, Berliner Philarmoniker, Renaud and Gautier Capuçon, Boris Andrianov, among others.

the Fantasy on themes from Rigoletto by Verdi/Luigi Bassi,

Three tangos by Astor Piazzolla (Libertango, Oblivion, Adios Nonino)

"Jewels of the Classical music" / Works by Mendelssohn, Mahler and Frank

Michael Guttman, the Belgian violinist, praised by Allan Kozinn of the New York Times for "his incredible wealth of tone colors and his sound of melting beauty". Guttman not only has an internationally acclaimed career as a violinist, but also has recently taken the position of conductor, collaborating with artists such as Martha Argerich, Boris Berezovsky and Natalia Gutman, and has founded and runs the "Pietrasanta in Concerto" Festival in Tuscany.

Pianist Alexandra Nomidou has appeared many times in the Athens Megaron Concert Hall and in many known concert halls in France, England, Belgium, Switzerland, Italy, Turkey, Brazil and USA, as a soloist with Orchestras and in chamber music concerts, mainly with "Trio Hellenique". She has recorded two albums with EMI, with works by Schumann, Schubert, Brahms and Ravel, which received excellent reviews. Since 2005, she has been artistic director of the "Around the piano" concert series, in Athens. She lives and works in Paris.


October, 21  at 21:00 – Grypario Cultural Centre

"The Pilgrim" / Alkinoos Ioannides, guitars and vocals

Alkinoos Ioannidis, is a well acclaimed and very popular artist in Greece. In his 20 years of musical career, he has become a distinguished composer, lyricist, orchestrator and singer. His live shows are renowned for their original and inspiring orchestrations, as well as his selected collaborations, which always lend his live shows a magical atmosphere, with emphasis on the combination of the music with the lyrics.

In this concert the musician becomes a bard, using his guitar to accompany his soft voice in telling us his stories. Stories about dreams, mirrors, revolutions, the rain and the sea. Stories that will unravel before our very eyes, opening a Pandora's Box full of emotions ....

During the days of the Festival, the public can also enjoy the "ConcertOff" activities which will include special walks in the environs of the island, trips to Delos sacred archaeological sites, gourmet evenings and other events shaped by the initiative and the participation of the audience.
